Ever wonder what you want to
be or what you want to become? When we were younger, we always want to become
something, or someone but for those who have not thought about that, they are
still looking for themselves, despite having doing it for many, many years.
I used to have a dream of
becoming a doctor when I was younger, but as I grew up, I encountered and was
exposed to different experiences in life, a lot of things changed, on top of
that, studying at that time does not really agree with me much and thus, the
starting of the journey of ‘looking for myself’. Since I can no longer pursue
my ambition as a doctor (just any doctor in general), while in the process of
‘looking for myself’, I found myself attracted to the field I am pursuing now.
I always have an interest in getting to know people, observing and listening to
them and try to give advice but, I am no adviser nor a counsellor and also not
a professional, thus an interest sparked from within though at that time I was
still stuck with no future plans of whatsoever.
At one point, while
travelling and meeting with lots of people from different backgrounds and
culture, I start to realize that I do not have to ‘look for myself’ because I
do know what I want to be and what I want to do. It was all the circumstances
and other miscellaneous things that hinder me from advancing further. Thus the
journey begins with going back to university and pick up Psychology and to gain
a professional degree. But, after my first paper in Psychology as a Natural
Science, I am yet again plunged into another pool of decisions.
Far from being a licensed
psychologist, my current status is a full-time employee in the hospitality
industry and a part-time student in Massey
University in the
Distance Learning division with Psychology as my major. This is my first year,
second semester with two papers under my arm – Communication in the Sciences,
of which I am trying my best to unleash my potential in science writings on one
of the assignments now, even though the pieces I write may not be the best but
hopefully will be all going towards that direction; and Psychology as a Social
Science, which I may, or may not write about in later posts.
Most people will jump to
conclusions that I will become a psychologist, or for some, a mind-reader of
some sort, or maybe a psychic. All these are untrue since the subject of
Psychology have not been truly and widely discussed or explained. It is in
fact, a very interesting subject and that is why I am intrigued by the topics I
am studying. Also this will be part of our challenge to try to educate and
communicate with people what we study and do especially once we graduate. As
there are many fields in the real-world that psychology can be implemented in.
Communication is very
important and it impacts on how people react and this is one of the reasons why
as Science students, it is a compulsory subject for us to learn to write
scientifically and also at the same time to be able to get our points out to
normal audiences, just like us who took up Psychology so that we can inform and
educate them without all the scientific jargons but still able to get the
message across.
There are still a lot for me
to learn therefore, I hope to be able to pick up more skills whether in
communicating with others in writing or even via face-to-face; or simply simple
skills just for our daily usage in life. Hope that one day I will be of service to you if you need someone to talk to, I am Geraldine, simply called Gerry.
